Taurus Frequently Asked Questions:

Have questions about Taurus Premix, Boss Feeds tubs, custom nutrition, or how to use our resources? This page brings together the answers producers ask for most often—so you can move from “not sure” to “let’s get it done” without hunting across the site.

About Taurus Premix:

Taurus Premix has been supporting Western Canadian ranchers since 1952 with science-backed nutrition built for real-world ranch conditions. These FAQs cover who we are, where we work, and what we do.

What does Taurus Premix do?

Taurus Premix designs and manufactures mineral, salt and premix programs for livestock operations across Western Canada. We focus on precision nutrition—matching your minerals and supplements to your forage, water and production goals so your cattle, sheep, goats, bison and horses get what they need without waste.

Our work ranges from standard bagged minerals and salt blocks to fully custom blends based on forage tests and on-farm audits.

Where is Taurus Premix located and which areas do you serve?

Taurus Premix Ltd. is based in Cardston, Alberta and serves ranchers across the Canadian Prairies and Western Canada. From foothills cow–calf herds to mixed farms and feedlots, our programs are built for the conditions you face every season.

Which species does Taurus Premix support?

Our nutrition programs cover a wide range of livestock and companion animals, including:

  • Beef and dairy cattle
  • Sheep and goats
  • Horses and performance equine
  • Swine and poultry
  • Pets and specialty species through partner feeds
  • Bison and range-based herds where mineral delivery is challenging
How is Taurus different from generic bagged minerals?

Generic bagged minerals are usually built for “average” conditions. Taurus programs are built for your conditions—your water, forage, species mix and production goals.

  • We start with forage and water tests where possible.
  • Our nutritionist designs blends for specific seasons and challenges.
  • We monitor how the program performs and adjust when conditions change.

The goal is simple: fewer surprises, steadier intake and more predictable performance.

Do you only work with large operations?

No. Taurus supports everything from smaller family herds to large, multi-site ranches. The same process—understanding your forage, herd and goals—applies regardless of scale. Smaller operations often see some of the biggest gains from getting minerals right.

Custom Nutrition:

Custom nutrition is at the core of what Taurus does. These FAQs explain how a custom program is built and what to expect when working with our nutrition team.

What does “custom nutrition” mean at Taurus?

Custom nutrition means we don’t try to fit your herd into a one-size-fits-all mineral. Instead, we design a program around:

  • Your forage profile and water tests
  • Herd size, species and stage of production
  • Current issues—conception, feet, intake, health or gains
  • How you actually feed: pasture, drylot, TMR or a mix

The result is a mineral or supplement that matches your conditions instead of guessing at them.

How does the custom nutrition process work?

The process follows five main steps:

  • Herd & Forage Audit – We review herd size, production cycles, forage tests, intake habits and on-farm challenges.
  • Precision Formulation – Our nutritionist, Jim Hansen, builds a formula based on your forage profile, seasonal needs and goals.
  • Production & Delivery – We manufacture your mix at Cardston and ship it through our distribution partners.
  • Performance Review – We watch conception, condition, intake and health indicators.
  • Ongoing Support – As forage and water change, we adjust the program so it keeps working.
What information do you need from my operation?

The more we know, the better your program will fit. At minimum, we’ll ask for:

  • Herd size by class (cows, replacements, pairs, feeders, sheep, goats, etc.)
  • Current feeding system (pasture, bale grazing, TMR, silage, residues)
  • Recent forage and water tests, if available
  • Current minerals, tubs or premixes you’re using
  • Top concerns—conception, intake, growth, health, or specific deficiencies
How often should a custom program be reviewed?

At minimum, we recommend reviewing your program at least once per year, and any time one of the following changes:

  • New forage source or major ration change
  • Significant shifts in water quality
  • Changes in herd size, production targets, or calving/breeding windows
  • New or recurring health or performance issues
What types of problems can custom nutrition help solve?

Common issues Taurus custom programs are built to address include:

  • Inconsistent mineral intake across the herd
  • Seasonal deficiencies as forage quality drops
  • Poor forage quality or drought-stressed grass
  • Low conception rates and calving problems linked to nutrition
  • Mineral antagonists like sulfur, iron and molybdenum
  • Weather-driven intake drops in heat, mud, snow and cold

Products & Catalogue:

Taurus Premix offers bagged salts, bagged minerals, custom premixes and specialty blends across species. These FAQs explain how to navigate the catalogue and choose where to start.

What types of products does Taurus Premix offer?

Taurus products are grouped into several main categories so you can match form to how you feed:

  • Bagged Salt – Plain and fortified salts for hydration and mineral intake.
  • Bagged Minerals – Complete mineral packages for cows, feeders, sheep, goats, dairy and equine.
  • Premix Solutions – Concentrated mineral and vitamin premixes for TMRs, grain-based rations and on-farm mixing.
  • Salt Blocks – Weather-resistant blocks for pasture or yard use.
  • Specialty Products – Inoculants, conditioners and partner feeds that fit into your overall program.

You can browse Taurus-branded products in the online catalogue by filtering Brand = Taurus Premix.

How do I know which Taurus product to start with?

If you’re just getting started, we recommend two steps:

  • Review the Products page and filter to Taurus Premix to see which minerals and salts match your species and feeding style.
  • Book a quick call with our nutrition specialist to confirm the best fit for your herd and forage.

For more complex operations, we usually move straight into a custom nutrition discussion so you’re not guessing.

Are Taurus minerals species-specific?

Yes. While some mineral programs are suitable for multiple classes of cattle, products for sheep, goats and horses are specifically labelled for those species. Sheep minerals in particular require careful copper control, so never feed a cattle mineral to sheep unless the tag explicitly allows it.

Can I buy Taurus minerals in bulk or totes?

In many cases, yes. Depending on the product and your volume, we can supply:

  • Bagged product on pallets
  • Totes or mini-bulk formats
  • Bulk premix for on-farm TMR systems

Talk to our team about which packaging format makes the most sense for your operation and freight.

How do I order Taurus or Boss Feeds products?

Partner Products:

Alongside Taurus-branded minerals and salts, we work with trusted partners such as Boss Feeds, Hoffman's, Masterfeeds and others to round out your nutrition and farm essentials.

What are “partner products” in the Taurus catalogue?

Partner products are carefully selected feeds and supplies from brands that align with our standards. They include:

  • Horse feeds and supplements
  • Poultry, sheep and goat feeds
  • Pet food and specialty nutrition
  • Farm essentials such as twine, netwrap, silage wrap and DEF

These products let you build a complete nutrition and supply program through one contact—Taurus.

Do partner products replace Taurus minerals?

No. Partner products are intended to work with your Taurus mineral and salt program, not replace it. For example, a partner horse feed may be paired with a Taurus mineral program, or a poultry feed may be used alongside Taurus farm mineral in a mixed operation.

Can I buy Boss Feeds products through Taurus?

Yes. Boss Feeds is part of the same family of companies, and Taurus works closely with Boss Feeds to align mineral tubs, twine, netwrap and DEF with your overall ranch plan. Boss Feeds FAQs are covered in a separate section below.

How do I know if a partner product fits my operation?

Start by identifying the species and purpose (e.g., performance horses, backyard poultry, working dogs). Then talk with our team so we can:

  • Confirm the product is the right fit for your animals
  • Check that it lines up with your Taurus mineral program
  • Coordinate delivery with other Taurus and Boss Feeds orders

Resources & Guides:

The Taurus Resources and Feeding Guides pages are designed to turn mineral science into practical tools you can actually use in the field.

What can I find on the Taurus Resources page?

The Resources page includes nutrition guides, feeding strategies, herd health content and usage notes for Taurus minerals, salts and tubs. It’s built to help you:

  • Understand how minerals interact with forage and water
  • Adjust feeding as seasons change
  • Interpret feeding tags and analysis statements
  • Use products correctly in pasture, pens or TMR systems
Where do I find mineral feeding charts and seasonal checklists?

Feeding charts and seasonal checklists are located under Resources → Feeding Guides. You’ll find:

  • 12-month planning tools for Taurus minerals and Boss Feeds tubs
  • Seasonal priority tables for winter, spring, summer and fall
  • Livestock class tables (cow–calf, backgrounding, dairy, sheep/goats, bison and more)
  • Stress and special condition guides for drought, sulfur, weather and weaning
Are the feeding guides only for cattle?

No. While many examples focus on beef herds, the principles apply to dairy, sheep, goats, horses, bison and mixed operations. When species-specific limits apply—such as copper levels for sheep—they are highlighted in the tables and resources.

Are the downloadable fact sheets available yet?

Several Taurus fact sheets—such as Trace Mineral Interactions Overview, Seasonal Mineral Programs and How to Read a Mineral Tag—are being updated and will be available as downloadable PDFs. Until then, the key concepts from those sheets are woven into the online guides and feeding charts.

Do the guides replace working with a nutritionist?

No. The guides are meant to be starting points, not final prescriptions. They help you ask better questions and see how seasons, forage and class of livestock change mineral demand. For complex situations—multiple stressors, mixed species, or repeated issues—working with our nutrition specialist is still the best route.

Boss Feeds Ltd.

Boss Feeds Prodcuts:

Boss Feeds is the tub and farm-supply brand within the Taurus family. These FAQs focus on how Boss Feeds tubs and supplies fit into your Taurus mineral program.

How do Boss Feeds mineral tubs work with Taurus minerals?

Boss Feeds tubs are designed to complement your Taurus mineral program, not replace it. Tubs typically provide:

  • Additional energy and protein on tough forage
  • Palatable intake during stress events, cold snaps or low-quality feed
  • Support for specific phases like calving, breeding or weaning

Your Taurus mineral still carries the core trace mineral load; the tubs help animals get more out of the forage in front of them.

When should I consider adding Boss Feeds tubs?

Common times to add tubs include:

  • Wintering cows or backgrounders on lower-quality hay or residues
  • Pre-calving and breeding, when energy and protein demand spike
  • Weaning, receiving and transport periods with higher stress
  • Periods of severe weather—deep cold, storms, long mud seasons

The Taurus Feeding Guides page includes a 12-month tub planning chart to help you decide which tub fits each season.

Which species can use Boss Feeds tubs?

Boss Feeds offers tubs for:

  • Cattle – maintenance, calving/breeding, stress and high-protein tubs
  • Sheep – sheep-safe tubs with appropriate mineral levels
  • Equine – tubs for horses under stress or changing workload

Always check the species label and never feed a product to a species that is not listed on the tag.

What other Boss Feeds products are available?

Beyond mineral tubs, Boss Feeds supplies key farm essentials such as:

  • Baler twine and netwrap
  • DEF and related fluids
  • Other seasonal supplies used across Western Canadian ranches

These products are chosen to support the same operations that rely on Taurus minerals and custom mixes.

Who should I talk to about Boss Feeds tubs and supplies?

Start with the Taurus contact form or your usual Taurus representative. From there, we’ll loop in the appropriate Boss Feeds contact to align tubs, twine, netwrap and DEF with your overall nutrition and forage plan.
