Have questions about Taurus Premix, Boss Feeds tubs, custom nutrition, or how to use our resources? This page brings together the answers producers ask for most often—so you can move from “not sure” to “let’s get it done” without hunting across the site.
Taurus Premix has been supporting Western Canadian ranchers since 1952 with science-backed nutrition built for real-world ranch conditions. These FAQs cover who we are, where we work, and what we do.
Taurus Premix designs and manufactures mineral, salt and premix programs for livestock operations across Western Canada. We focus on precision nutrition—matching your minerals and supplements to your forage, water and production goals so your cattle, sheep, goats, bison and horses get what they need without waste.
Our work ranges from standard bagged minerals and salt blocks to fully custom blends based on forage tests and on-farm audits.
Taurus Premix Ltd. is based in Cardston, Alberta and serves ranchers across the Canadian Prairies and Western Canada. From foothills cow–calf herds to mixed farms and feedlots, our programs are built for the conditions you face every season.
Our nutrition programs cover a wide range of livestock and companion animals, including:
Generic bagged minerals are usually built for “average” conditions. Taurus programs are built for your conditions—your water, forage, species mix and production goals.
The goal is simple: fewer surprises, steadier intake and more predictable performance.
No. Taurus supports everything from smaller family herds to large, multi-site ranches. The same process—understanding your forage, herd and goals—applies regardless of scale. Smaller operations often see some of the biggest gains from getting minerals right.
Custom nutrition is at the core of what Taurus does. These FAQs explain how a custom program is built and what to expect when working with our nutrition team.
Custom nutrition means we don’t try to fit your herd into a one-size-fits-all mineral. Instead, we design a program around:
The result is a mineral or supplement that matches your conditions instead of guessing at them.
The process follows five main steps:
The more we know, the better your program will fit. At minimum, we’ll ask for:
At minimum, we recommend reviewing your program at least once per year, and any time one of the following changes:
Common issues Taurus custom programs are built to address include:
Taurus Premix offers bagged salts, bagged minerals, custom premixes and specialty blends across species. These FAQs explain how to navigate the catalogue and choose where to start.
Taurus products are grouped into several main categories so you can match form to how you feed:
You can browse Taurus-branded products in the online catalogue by filtering Brand = Taurus Premix.
If you’re just getting started, we recommend two steps:
For more complex operations, we usually move straight into a custom nutrition discussion so you’re not guessing.
Yes. While some mineral programs are suitable for multiple classes of cattle, products for sheep, goats and horses are specifically labelled for those species. Sheep minerals in particular require careful copper control, so never feed a cattle mineral to sheep unless the tag explicitly allows it.
In many cases, yes. Depending on the product and your volume, we can supply:

Alongside Taurus-branded minerals and salts, we work with trusted partners such as Boss Feeds, Hoffman's, Masterfeeds and others to round out your nutrition and farm essentials.
Partner products are carefully selected feeds and supplies from brands that align with our standards. They include:
These products let you build a complete nutrition and supply program through one contact—Taurus.
No. Partner products are intended to work with your Taurus mineral and salt program, not replace it. For example, a partner horse feed may be paired with a Taurus mineral program, or a poultry feed may be used alongside Taurus farm mineral in a mixed operation.
Yes. Boss Feeds is part of the same family of companies, and Taurus works closely with Boss Feeds to align mineral tubs, twine, netwrap and DEF with your overall ranch plan. Boss Feeds FAQs are covered in a separate section below.
Start by identifying the species and purpose (e.g., performance horses, backyard poultry, working dogs). Then talk with our team so we can:
The Taurus Resources and Feeding Guides pages are designed to turn mineral science into practical tools you can actually use in the field.
The Resources page includes nutrition guides, feeding strategies, herd health content and usage notes for Taurus minerals, salts and tubs. It’s built to help you:
Feeding charts and seasonal checklists are located under Resources → Feeding Guides. You’ll find:
No. While many examples focus on beef herds, the principles apply to dairy, sheep, goats, horses, bison and mixed operations. When species-specific limits apply—such as copper levels for sheep—they are highlighted in the tables and resources.
Several Taurus fact sheets—such as Trace Mineral Interactions Overview, Seasonal Mineral Programs and How to Read a Mineral Tag—are being updated and will be available as downloadable PDFs. Until then, the key concepts from those sheets are woven into the online guides and feeding charts.
No. The guides are meant to be starting points, not final prescriptions. They help you ask better questions and see how seasons, forage and class of livestock change mineral demand. For complex situations—multiple stressors, mixed species, or repeated issues—working with our nutrition specialist is still the best route.
Boss Feeds is the tub and farm-supply brand within the Taurus family. These FAQs focus on how Boss Feeds tubs and supplies fit into your Taurus mineral program.
Boss Feeds tubs are designed to complement your Taurus mineral program, not replace it. Tubs typically provide:
Your Taurus mineral still carries the core trace mineral load; the tubs help animals get more out of the forage in front of them.
Common times to add tubs include:
The Taurus Feeding Guides page includes a 12-month tub planning chart to help you decide which tub fits each season.
Boss Feeds offers tubs for:
Always check the species label and never feed a product to a species that is not listed on the tag.
Beyond mineral tubs, Boss Feeds supplies key farm essentials such as:
These products are chosen to support the same operations that rely on Taurus minerals and custom mixes.
Start with the Taurus contact form or your usual Taurus representative. From there, we’ll loop in the appropriate Boss Feeds contact to align tubs, twine, netwrap and DEF with your overall nutrition and forage plan.
